Key Species: Odonfee [Ooo-Don-fee]

Odonfee are a strange hybrid type of species, it’s unknown how they occurred in the wild, with human akin sentence and even the ability to shift between 2 [and rarely more] forms being rather common.
However, it is clear that they have when you look at their deep history and some of the other species that share their planet, it is possibly something to do with that magic they talk of.They’re distinctly made up of three species types:
Mammal
[Most commonly Canine, followed by Equidae and then Feline]
Crocodilian
SerpentTheir main bodies and head shape tend to come from their mammalian component.
Their tails & diet come from their crocodilian.
Their serpent element tends to come in heat pits around their mouth as well as their colouring.
It is not uncommon for their tails to appear more serpent like then crocodilian, but this variety tend to favour water less.
There are also others who follow slightly different genetics, three clear subspecies but all from the same crop and they're all genetically compatible.

Odonfee Forms

Odonfee are most commonly found in a more creature like form, and is considered their default by both their own kind and others.
The second most common form is a more humanoid one, the only traits carrying across being their ears and tail, certain members keep other features but this seems to be up to the individual.
This is something all Odonfee have with their natural magics.
It's unknown what causes any to get further forms, but it seems to affect any hybrids more then any others, or those with strong other worldly abilities.

Specialised Dimorphism

It is unknown what has caused this dimorphism, though it is clear it has been exasperated by the Odonfee moving to habitats that better suit their traits once they start to appear. It is not uncommon to see a pup from a standard family travelling to further depths when it was born with flippers, then creating a family with a member of an ocean pack.
However, a hybrid between the subspecies has never been seen, no Odonfee with both crocodilian and deep ocean tails.

Standard:
Consist of: Mammal + Crocodilian + Serpent
The most common variety, semi-aquatic and can be fresh or salt water.
Able to breath on both land & underwater, they can have visible or hidden gills.
Horns are a common side-trait these Odonfee host.

Land:
Consist of: Mammal + Serpent
Referred to as the land variety, but often still swim frequently & live around water.
They can only breath on land.
This variety have serpent tails rather than crocodilian ones.

Ocean:
Consists of: Mammal + Aquatic* + Serpent
*Aquatic is Mosasauridae or Plesiosauridae rarely it is a variety of fish
These Odonfee favour the deep ocean, and often look more ‘monstrous’.
On basis they cannot breath on land, though many can for a short period of time.
Fins & Flippers are a common side trait.

Mutations

These can affect all varieties of Odonfee, though some mutations are more common in specific versions, depending on what is more functional for them. i.e a land Odonfee would be unlikely to have a flipper mutation as it is less functional.General:

-Fish like tail membraneThere are new mutations popping up now and then, some of these are line bred, meaning they will only show up in a specific family, but others seem to have random chance over if they show up in a family. One or both parents having a mutation does make it more likely that their offspring will have one, but does not mean they defiantly will.Not allowed:
There are some mutations that are explicitly never shown in Odonfee. Be it because they are impractical or just do not exist. There may be a form of magic within this species, but there is still a sense of realism to them.

As a semi-aquatic species this makes no sense even for the land variety, feathers may present a bit like miniature wings but are non-functional

Genetics aren’t that complicated when it comes to the Odonfee because of their partial magical nature.
Colours & traits tend to come from their parents, though there is a chance that any Odonfee has a mutation. There is also a chance that any pairing produces a different dimorphism to the parents, but only if their environment could provide for them.

Examples:

With the way that Odonfee work, pups will be inspired by the same aspects that make up their parent. If the mammal for both parents are canines - then their pups aren't likely to be equidae. However, this isn't necessarily true, an Odonfee is the sum of all of their parts so can't really be separated out. As long as they still resemble their parents in some way anything is possible.
Back shoots from genetics also work, a pup could look nothing like it's parents but just like their aunt or grandmother.

Parents & Pups

Parents can consist of a male & female, two male or two female Odonfee. Their genetics allow them to reproduce no matter what their desired partner is.
Queer relationships are common place and so are queer identities, it is more then possible for an Odonfee to be on the trans spectrum.
Their pups are born in litters between 1-6, however in the modern world they tend to range more frequently between 1-3. There is the ability to have identical pups within this, though that maxes out at three being identical, with them having grown from the same egg. It is also possible to have a chimera pup, where two fused at an early enough but also late state where they have two distinct sets of DNA but fuse enough to live normally. This however, is rare.

Hybrids

It seems Odonfee have the ability to hybrid with most species, though Ocean Odonfee rarely do so with their ill ability to breath air on the surface.An Odonfee hybrid tends to favour their Odonfee DNA for their main body, all having the 'base' form an Odonfee has, usually with another that better references their other parent. Their colours do tend to pull more from the other species, which is why there are far more vibrant Odonfee around.Despite the fact that they seem to be able to reproduce with any other species due to their magic, it is only other species with the same or higher sentience as them [baseline, human]. They also only tend to aim for other creatures that are either semi-aquatic or can swim as a species, you wouldn't find them breeding with something that is covered in feathers and flies a lot.
The sex of the Odonfee doesn't matter in reproduction, much like when reproducing within their species.

Odonfee Ocean was first a passion project I came up with back in 2020 just before covid. I loved running it but with everything going on, I became burnt out and I sadly left them to rot.
However, here they are again, I am revamping them and bringing them back to life.Unless stated otherwise all art and concepts are created by me, if created by someone else it will be specifically credited so.

The Odonfee aren't the only unique species on their homeworld, both native and non-native. Some have came to live harmony with the species and others are invasive.
With the Odonfee being very social and friendly creatures, they welcome species onto their homeworld, which isn't always the best thing.

Native: Udencean - (U-den-cean)

Another sentient & semi-aquatic species the Udencean and Odonfee realised long ago it was more beneficial for both species to live in harmony rather then at odds.
A mammalian species not designed for open water travel they stick to the coast and shallower water, only really traveling further to coral reefs where they can travel along the floor easily with plenty of places to hold onto.
With a diet made mainly of shellfish and urchins there is little food competition between the Udencean and Odonfee, keeping the peace between the two species. It's not uncommon place to see cross species couples.
Currently, it is unknown if they can reproduce with the Odonfee.
They do speak the same generalised tongue, though not all Udencean also speak the Odonfee tongue and not all Odonfee speak the Udencean tongue.

Native: Udonkeer - (U-don-Kh-ear)

There are two variants of the Udonkeer and it’s key for anyone to know the difference between them, though anyone inexperienced is warned to stay away from these highly volatile creatures. With their being a general wild variety as well as a tamed type kept by well experienced farmers.
Often compared to the beasts of earth as cattle, these are obligate carnivores and will hunt for sport as well as simply prey. It is unknown how or why the Odonfee & Undecean of old managed to create a tamer livestock version.
Warm blooded and probably mammalian, Udonkeer cover most of the land on the planet, though they favour the dessert flats and mountains. They are also hunted and tend to now herd away from the forests where the Lentesorites now dwell.
These beasts are incapable of swimming and will often panic when drawn into the water, making them easy and filling prey for the larger Odonfee specimen, though most don’t bother hunting the wild Udonkeer unless if it’s to shrink the population.

Invasive: Lentesorite - (Len-TEA-sore-ITE)

A sentient but invasive species originally from the planet Phukiyah, a small group of Lentesorite first landed here before discovering it was a perfect breeding ground for their species.
They are carnivores specialised to hunt prey larger then them, and unfortunately the Odonfee, especially the more traditional packs have become perfect prey for them. The Udencean are trying to help broker the relationship between the species so that the Lentesorite can be welcomed onto their planet and not hunt the other main habitant.
Despite this, there have been groups of Lentesorite that have made their own deal with groups of Odonfee and they live and hunt other species together. Showing that they are more then aware that they both have the same sentient level, even if there is a main language barrier.
It is unclear if they would be able to actually form the common tongue or not.

In itself the Odonfee homeworld doesn't seem all that unique.
Most of the surface is covered in ocean though there are still large land continents. Mountains are counted by massive oceanic trenches.
Most sentient species tend to stick towards the coasts, avoiding the centre of the continents and their large forests and deserts. Though the Lentesorite have taken up residence in the larger forests of the planet. However, inner continent lakes have brought some life into the less developed parts of the planet.
With both the Odonfee and the Udencean, the main residents of the planet being semi-aquatic and staying around the ocean, this is where most off-planet travellers come to.

• Religion

Religion is odd within the planet.
Simply due to the fact it is a known fact that Gods exist and have interacted with both the Odonfee but also the Udencean.

Gods

What is known is that the Gods aren't some all powerful beings, they have their own abilities but are also tricky beings to work with. Some like to be worshipped and others will grow irritated with the mortals doing thus.
Most Gods and Demi-Gods resemble the Odonfee though some also look like Udencean, a few look like neither. You cannot always tell when you have met a god but some like to make it clear. Others are no more then whispers now adays.

The whole planet is swathed with magic and this affects all native species but to differing levels.
Magic is seen in a couple of ways due to it's common place in the world, it can still be seen with wonder, especially among the Udencean where it is not always so natural among them. However, Odonfee tend to see it rather more scientifically as they all are gifted with it in one way or another. Visible clearest in their ability to shift between at least two different forms.

Odonfee:

All Odonfee naturally have a medium level of magic within their body, allowing them the ability to shift.
Due to this, they have never been so strict in organising magic into a system like the Udencean and they have no urge to really know where it came from.
Many do view it rather clinically however, trying to work out how far they can push it and exactly what they can do with it, it's clear that the type does depend on the subspecies. No Ocean Odonfee has ever displayed any form of fire or energy magic but, land Odonfee have displayed magic that would be more beneficial to the creatures that live down in the deep.

Odonfee hybrids do seem to display a higher level of magic then 'normal' ones, even when the other species has no or little natural magic. This is a phenomenon which the Odonfee are trying to explain, could it be as simple as a gift from the gods to ensure that the hybrid is healthy and successful?

Udencean

Magic is an uncommon trait to affect Udencean, though they are more than capable of learning. It is not a genetic cause, even if both parents have magic, it is not a guarantee that their children will have it.

Despite not being a trait across the whole species many Udencean chose to learn magic to best serve their lifestyle.
It's used for both it's uses in work and help but also as a form of entertainment. Those with the weakest magic tend to only use it as entertainment.

Lentesorite

Despite the invasive species having been here for many generations now, there is no natural or learnt magic showing within them.
It is unknown if this is something completely impossible with their genealogy or if it will simply take a lot longer then the time they have already spent on the plant.
It is also unclear if they have even tried to learn it themselves in the same way as the Udencean, they may be friendlier with that species but they aren't yet on the level that the Udencean would tutor their ways.
